Herbal tea, or tisane, is any beverage made from the infusion or decoction of herbs, spices, or other plant material in hot water, and usually does not contain caffeine. In traditional medicine, the fruits, seeds, roots, and leaves of burdock have been used as decoctions or teas for a wide range of ailments including colds, catarrh, gout, rheumatism, stomach ailments, prostate troubles, liver problems, cancers, and as a diuretic, diaphoretic and laxative. It has even been promoted as an aphrodisiac.
Externally, it has been used for various skin problems. Made from Kashmir himalayan herbs, fruits, seeds, or roots steeped in hot water, herbal teas have lower concentrations of antioxidants than green, white, black, and oolong teas. Their chemical compositions vary widely depending on the plant used. Varieties include burdock, sage, howthorn, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, hibiscus, jasmine, rosehip, mint, rooibos (red tea), chamomile, and echinacea.
Unlimited research has been done on the health benefits of herbal teas. Today, burdock root is used in oncology for its cancer-curing properties, particularly in Russia and India.
