The name “Kashmir poplar” is a misnomer and has nothing to do with Russia. The variety of poplar trees was introduced in Kashmir in 1982 from the US. Locally called as Russi Frass, the species takes less time (10-15 years) to grow, as compared to the Kashmir poplar that takes 30-40 years.

Medicinal use of Buxus wallichiana 

The wood is diaphoretic. The leaves are bitter, diaphoretic and purgative. They have proved useful in the treatment of rheumatism, Hair growth and syphilis. The bark is febrifuge.

Other uses of Buxus wallichiana: Plants can be grown as a hedge, they are very tolerant of pruning but are slow growing. Wood - hard, fine grained, durable. Used for engraving, fine carving, mathematical instruments etc. It is at least equal in quality to B. sempervirens.
