Pyrethrum seeds

Bot.name: Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium,Tanacetum cinerariifolium
Cashmerian name: Kartik posh
Other names: Dalmation Pellitory, Pyrethrum, Pyrethrum daisy,
Family: Compositae
Chemical constituents: The pyrethrins are a pair of natural organic compounds normally derived from Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium that have potent insecticidal activity. Pyrethrins are neurotoxins that attack the nervous systems of all insects. When present in amounts not fatal to insects, they still appear to have an insect repellent effect. Pyrethrins are gradually replacing organophosphates and organochlorides as the pesticide of first choice. They are non-persistent, being biodegradable, and break down on exposure to light or oxygen. The chemical structure of pyrethrins inspired the production of a variety of synthetic insecticides called pyrethroids such as bifenthrin, permethrin, and cypermethrin.
Six compounds were isolated and identified as: linoeic acid, pinoresinol, (+)-pinoresinol-4'-O-beta-D- glucopyranoside, betulabuside A, dihydrosyringin.

Medicinal use of Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium : Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium is not used medicinally, though research has shown that the flowers possess weak antibiotic activity. The flowers are the main source of the insecticide pyrethrum, which is toxic to insects but not to mammals. It has sometimes been used as a vermifuge in China.

Swiss Chard-Beta vulgaris

Add caption
The Rehab beet (Beta vulgaris) is a plant in the Chenopodiaceae family which is now included in Amaranthaceae family. It is best known in its numerous cultivated varieties, the most well known of which is the root vegetable known as the beetroot or garden beet. However, other cultivated varieties include the leaf vegetable chard, as well as the root vegetable sugar beet, which is important in the production of table sugar, and mangelwurzel, which is a fodder crop. Three subspecies are typically recognised. All cultivated varieties fall into the subspecies Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris, while Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima, commonly known as the sea beet, is the wild ancestor of these, and is found throughout the Mediterranean, the Atlantic coast of Europe, the Near East, and Kashmir. A second wild subspecies, Beta vulgaris subsp. adanensis, occurs from Greece to Syria.

The roots are most commonly deep red-purple in color, but come in a wide variety of other shades, including golden yellow and red-and-white striped.

Beta vulgaris is a herbaceous biennial or, rarely, perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall. The leaves are heart-shaped, 5–20 cm long on wild plants (often much larger in cultivated plants). The flowers are produced in dense spikes; each flower is very small, 3–5 mm diameter, green or tinged reddish, with five petals; they are wind pollinated. The fruit is a cluster of hard nutlets.

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha) for Sale, India, Kashmir, Srinagar

Howthorn berries
Hawthorn (Crataegus  oxycantha) has been used to treat heart disease as far back as the 1st century. By the early 1800s, American doctors were using it to treat circulatory disorders and respiratory illnesses. Traditionally, the berries were used to treat heart problems ranging from irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, chest pain, hardening of the arteries, and heart failure. Today, the leaves and flowers are used medicinally, and there is good evidence that hawthorn can treat mild-to-moderate heart failure.

Plant Description:
Hawthorn is a common thorny shrub in the rose family that grows up to 5 feet tall on hillsides and in sunny wooded areas throughout the world. Its flowers bloom in May. They grow in small white, red, or pink clusters. Small berries, called haws, sprout after the flowers. They are usually red when ripe, but they may also be black. Hawthorn leaves are shiny and grow in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Animal and laboratory studies report hawthorn contains antioxidants, including oligomeric procyandins (OPCs, also found in grapes) and quercetin. Antioxidants are substances that destroy free radicals -- compounds in the body that damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body and grow in number as we age. Environmental toxins (including ultraviolet light, radiation, smoking, some medicines, and air pollution) can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Free radicals are believed to contribute to the aging process (such as wrinkling) as well as the development of a number of health problems including cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants found in hawthorn may help stop some of the damage from free radicals, especially when it comes to heart disease.

Hawthorn contains many substances that may benefit the heart. These antioxidant flavonoids -- including OPCs -- may help dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow, and protect the blood vessels from damage.

The Hawthorn berries, leaves, and flowers of the hawthorn plant have been used for medicinal purposes. Most modern preparations use the leaves and flowers, which are believed to contain more of the flavonoids than the berries.

Hawthorn fruit  is used to help protect against heart disease and help control high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Heart failure
Hawthorn
has been widely studied in people with heart failure (a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to other organs in the body). A number of studies conclude that hawthorn significantly improved heart function. Studies also have found that the herb can improve the ability to exercise in a person with heart failure. Participants in studies have reported that hawthorn significantly improved symptoms of the disease (such as shortness of breath and fatigue). One study found that hawthorn extract (900 mg/day) taken for 2 months was as effective as low doses of captopril (a prescription heart medication) in improving symptoms of heart failure.

A large study found that a standardized hawthorn supplement was effective in 952 patients with heart failure. The study compared conventional methods of treating heart failure (with different medications) with hawthorn alone and in addition to the drugs. After 2 years, the clinical symptoms of heart failure (palpitations, breathing problems, and fatigue) decreased significantly in the patients taking the hawthorn supplement. People taking hawthorn also took less medications for their condition.

Heart failure is a serious condition, and you should never try to self-treat with hawthorn. Ask your doctor if hawthorn is right for you.

Chest pain (Angina)
Some preliminary evidence suggests hawthorn may help combat chest pain (angina), which is caused by low blood flow to the heart. In one early study, 60 people with angina were given either 180 mg/day of hawthorn berry-leaf-flower extract or placebo for 3 weeks. Those who received hawthorn experienced improved blood flow to the heart and were also able to exercise for longer periods of time without suffering from chest pain. However, more studies would be needed to say for sure whether hawthorn was effective.

High blood pressure
Although hawthorn has not been studied specifically in people with high blood pressure, some people think that its benefits in treating heart disease may carry over to treating high blood pressure (hypertension). However, so far not enough research has been done to say whether hawthorn is effective at lowering blood pressure -- and if so, by how much.

In one study, a hawthorn extract was found to be effective for hypertension in people with type 2 diabetes who were also taking their prescribed medicines. Participants took 1,200 mg hawthorn extract daily or placebo for 16 weeks. Those taking hawthorn had lower blood pressures than those taking the placebo.

You should talk with your doctor before taking hawthorn if you have high blood pressure.

Available Forms:
Hawthorn is available in non-standardized and standardized capsules and liquid extracts, along with tinctures and solid extracts. A bitter-tasting tea can also be made from dried hawthorn leaves, flowers, and berries. Howthron capsules are also available in your local store.

Prostate problems and herbs

The Prostate is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the urethra, which carrier urine away from the bladder. The prostate is the most common site of disorders in the male Genito-urinary System. Generally speaking, there are three conditions that cdan cause problems with the prostate:

i)  Prostatitis , which is inflammation of the prostate gland;

ii)  Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) , which is an enlarged prostate with no signs of cancer

iii) Prostate cancer .

The first condition i.e. Prostatitis , or inflammation of gland, is mot common in young men. There are three types of prostatitis: Acute infectious prostatitis , Chronic infectious prostatitis , and non-infectious prostatitis . The acute and chronic infectious prostatitis occurs due to infection and the symptoms include a bladeer infection resulting in discomfort & burning micturition etc. and the cause of non-infectious prostatitis is not known, which is experienced by difficult urination/ ejaculation and lower abdominal pain. All types of prostatitis, if untreated can lead to impotency and difficulty in urination.

The second condition i.e Benign hypertrophy of Prostate is the gradual enlargement of the prostate. It occurs in approximately half of all men over the age of fifty and three quarters of men over seventy years of age and is largely attributable to hormonal change as associated with aging. A hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) tends to accumulate in the prostate causing cells to harden and enlarge and thereby creating resistance to the flow of urine from bladder. This conditions is known as Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) . This is a non-cancerous condition.

The main symptom in BPH is the inability to completely and freely urinate. Typically the afflicted man needs to get out of bed several times at night to urinate but finds his urine is minimal and often returns to bed with a full bladder. The long term effects can lead to kidney, bladder, and urinary tract infections and in severe cases lead to permanent kidney damage.

Testing for prostatitis and enlarge prostate usually involves a digital rectal exam plus a blood test that screens for levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein secreted by the prostate.

The third condition that is Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Canadian men and the 2 nd leading cause of Cancer death. This disease is mot common on older men, with 80% of cases of prostate cancer occurring in men over age 65. The possible symptoms of prostate cancer can include pain or a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, a decrease in the size and force of urine, and continuing lower back, pelvic or (supra) public discomfort. However, the disease often causes no symptoms al all until it reaches an advanced stage and/or spreads outside the gland. In addition, these symptoms most often are caused not by cancer, but by an enlarged prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia. Early detection can make it possible to catch the cancer before it spreads to other sites of the body. It is recommended that every man should have an annual rectal exam beginning at age fifty. A blood test to detect elevated levels of a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is an excellent screening test for prostate cancer. A PSA test result between 0 and 4 is considered to be within the normal range. A level between 4 and 10 may raise a doctor's suspicion and scores above 50 may indicate a tumor that has spread to elsewhere in the body.

Now I would like to give some tips for prevention of prostate troubles which include diet and lifestyle changes:-

(i). LOW FAT/HIGH PROTEIN DIET: A healthy diet plays an important role in prostate health. Aim for a diet that is moderately high in proteins (44% of your calories should be protein) since a high protein diet may inhibit the production of (5-alpha-reductase) the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Also look for a diet that is low in carbohydrates, low in animal fats, and high in essential fatty acids. Look for whole, unprocessed foods, and eat plenty of sunflower or pumpkin seeds each day. Add raw tomatoes to your diet.

(ii) PUSH THE FLUIDS: Drink plenty of fluids. Adequate fluid intake can help prevent bladder infections, cystitis, and kidney problems that are often associated with an enlarged prostate.
(iii) INCREASE YOUR FIBER: More fiber in the diet may reduce the risk of prostate cancer by lowering the levels of reproductive hormones in the body.

(iv) INCLUDE SOY IN YOUR DIET: Soy may decrease the chance of getting prostate cancer by reducing troublesome cholesterol levels.
Lifestyle Changes:

Rosmarinus officinalis-Rosemary plants

Family : Labiatae
Rosemary is commonly grown in the herb garden as a domestic remedy, used especially as a tonic and pick-me-up when feeling depressed, mentally tired, nervous etc. Research has shown that the plant is rich in volatile oils, flavanoids and phenolic acids, which are strongly antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Rosmarinic acid has potential in the treatment of toxic shock syndrome, whilst the flavonoid diosmin is reputedly more effective than rutin in reducing capillary fragility. Rosmarol, an extract from the leaves, has shown remarkably high antioxidant activity. The whole plant is antiseptic, antispasmodic, aromatic, astringent, cardiac, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, nervine, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. An infusion of the flowering stems made in a closed container to prevent the steam from escaping is effective in treating headaches, colic, colds and nervous diseases. A distilled water from the flowers is used as an eyewash. The leaves can be harvested in the spring or summer and used fresh, they can also be dried for later use. This remedy should not be prescribed for pregnant women since in excess it can cause an abortion. An essential oil distilled from the stems and leaves is often used medicinally, that distilled from the flowering tops is superior but not often available. The oil is applied externally as a rubefacient, added to liniments, rubbed into the temples to treat headaches and used internally as a stomachic and nervine. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy. Its keyword is "Stimulant".
