Aloe vera is not very hardy, so you shouldn't grow
it outdoors where nighttime temperatures can dip below 50 F.
However, in unusual weather, you can sometimes avoid freeze damage
by covering the plant with a cotton sheet; an optional light
bulbcan also be placed underneath, not touching the plant or
the sheet.
The benefits of Aloe Vera are almost
endless, a real must have plant in your garden. But the plant is
only hardy to zones 8–11 and loves well drained soil. Not a good fit for
a cold climate, to say the least. Still, we too can grow
Aloe Vera indoors and in a greenhouse.
Aloe Vera goes dormant during the winter,
so growth slows and water needs decrease. ... Root rot and cold shock
are very common problems in the winter. Healthy Aloe Vera plants
have firm, gel-filled leaves. An Aloe suffering from root rot
or cold shock has softened, drooping leaves.
