JK Seed Bank Offers Crocus sativus Saffron Corms in Kashmir

Saffron corms
For Kashmir conditions, a practical grading system can be built around corm weight, because research from the Pampore/SKUAST Kashmir region shows a strong relationship between corm size, flowering and saffron yield.

This is a practical grading proposal rather than an official universal grading standard. A Kashmir study divided corms into seven grades averaging 3.23, 7.09, 12.65, 18.66, 21.77, 27.49 and 32.01 g; the >30-g group produced the highest flowering, often around 4 flowers/corm, while the smaller first three groups did not flower in the first year.

Expected flowers per corm

Flower number is highly dependent on corm weight, genotype/planting material, nutrition, temperature, soil and year.

A useful planning range is:

  • <8 g: 0–1 flower/corm in the first year
  • 8–10 g: approximately 0–1 flower/corm
  • 10–15 g: approximately 1–2 flowers/corm
  • 15–20 g: approximately 1–2+ flowers/corm
  • 20–30 g: approximately 2–3 flowers/corm
  • >30 g: potentially up to 4 flowers/corm under favourable Kashmir conditions

The Kashmir experiment found that flowering corms generally produced a maximum of two flowers, whereas the >30-g corms could produce four.

Estimated saffron yield per hectare

There is no single yield figure because planting density, corm size, field age, irrigation, nutrition and weather can change yield substantially.

For Kashmir, a useful planning range would be:

A Kashmir study reported 3.16 kg/ha with >15-g corms under an improved planting/nutrient treatment, compared with a 2.15-kg/ha benchmark. Another Kashmir study reported 3.84–4.44 kg/ha under favourable organic-manure treatments. Research associated with Kashmir saffron improvement has also reported average productivity around 6.37 kg/ha over a four-year planting cycle, with lower first-year production and substantially higher production in later years under the recommended system.

A useful commercial target for JK Seed Bank

For JK Seed Bank, I would classify planting material commercially as:

Premium: >15 g
Standard: 10–15 g
Nursery grade: 5–10 g
Cormlet/nursery multiplication: <5 g

For premium saffron production, I would prioritize healthy, true-to-type, disease-free corms above 10 g, with >15 g particularly attractive for first-year flowering. Kashmir research specifically found heavier >15-g corms superior to 8–10-g corms for saffron and daughter-corm production.

Important: Flower number per corm should not be converted directly into saffron yield without considering stigma weight. Approximately 70,000–200,000 flowers may be required for 1 kg of dried saffron, illustrating why even small differences in flower production can have a major effect on final yield.
