The Growing Gold of Kashmir himalaya : Everything About Hazelnut Farming

Hazel trees in Kashmir
Hazelnut cultivation is gaining popularity in  South Kashmir, with farmers shifting towards this high-value crop due to promising market returns. While not native to Kashmir, hazelnuts thrive in the region's temperate climate, especially in high-altitude areas. Farmers in villages like Kokernag, Guridraman, and Matihandoo are increasingly planting hazelnuts, known locally as "virin," on approximately 2000 kanals of private land.

  • Growing Demand: The demand for hazelnuts is increasing, leading farmers to switch to this crop for better returns.
  • Government Support: A government-run farm in Lehenwan, Kokernag, has about 3,500 hazelnut plants, demonstrating the potential of this cultivation.
  • Local Name: Hazelnuts are locally known as "virin" in Kashmir.
  • Nutritional Value: Hazelnuts are rich in protein, healthy fats, and vitamins, making them a valuable addition to local cuisine and traditional medicine.
  • Climate Suitability: The cooler, temperate climate of Kashmir's mountainous regions is well-suited for hazelnut cultivation.
  • Planting and Harvesting: The planting season for hazelnuts is from December to April, and harvesting occurs in September.
  • Yield: Hazelnut trees typically start bearing fruit after four years.
  • Wild Trees: Wild hazelnut trees can also be found in areas like Kupwara, Kishtwar, Phalgam, Khrew, Pulwama, Shopiyan  and Baramulla.
