Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has emphasized the enduring value of traditional medicinal plants, stating that herbs such as Ashwagandha, Elderberry, Goji Berry, Black Pepper, Shatavari, and Ginkgo biloba have been treasured across generations for their remarkable healing and wellness properties. His remarks reflect India's rich heritage of herbal medicine and highlight the growing global recognition of these time-tested plants in modern healthcare.

For thousands of years, medicinal plants have formed the foundation of traditional healing systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Tibetan medicine. These systems have relied on nature to prevent disease, improve immunity, and support overall well-being. Today, modern scientific research is increasingly validating many of these traditional practices, leading to renewed interest in herbal medicine across the world.

Among the herbs mentioned by the Prime Minister, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is widely known for helping the body adapt to stress, improving energy levels, and supporting cognitive function. It has become one of India's most sought-after medicinal plants in international markets.

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) has long been valued in Ayurveda for supporting women's health, hormonal balance, digestion, and immunity. It continues to be an important ingredient in numerous herbal formulations.

Black Pepper (Piper nigrum), often called the "King of Spices," is not only a culinary spice but also a powerful medicinal herb. It contains piperine, which enhances the absorption of many nutrients and herbal compounds while providing antioxidant and digestive benefits.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Ginkgo biloba, one of the world's oldest living tree species. Ginkgo leaves have been extensively studied for their potential role in supporting memory, concentration, and healthy blood circulation. Its growing popularity demonstrates how traditional botanical knowledge continues to inspire modern research.

Goji Berry, often regarded as a superfruit, is valued for its rich content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and carotenoids. It has gained worldwide popularity as a functional food that supports immunity, eye health, and overall wellness.

Similarly, Elderberry has become internationally recognized for its traditional use in supporting immune health, particularly during seasonal respiratory illnesses. Scientific studies continue to investigate its bioactive compounds, especially anthocyanins, which possess antioxidant properties.

The Prime Minister's observations also point toward a significant economic opportunity. Rising global demand for herbal products has created new markets for medicinal plant cultivation, processing, and exports. India, with its diverse climate and extraordinary botanical wealth, is uniquely positioned to become a global leader in the herbal economy.

Regions such as Jammu and Kashmir possess exceptional potential for cultivating high-value medicinal plants, including Ginkgo biloba, Elderberry, Goji Berry, Ashwagandha, and numerous Himalayan herbs. These crops can provide farmers with diversified income while promoting sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation.

As the world increasingly embraces natural healthcare solutions, India's traditional medicinal knowledge is once again taking center stage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message serves as both a recognition of the country's ancient wisdom and a call to harness medicinal plants for better health, rural prosperity, scientific innovation, and global wellness. By combining traditional knowledge with modern research, India can strengthen its position as a global hub for herbal medicine and contribute meaningfully to healthier and more sustainable societies worldwide.

Nature, Healing, and the Spirit of the Elder Tree

Why Villagers Respected the Elder Tree
Feared by the devil. Favoured by foragers. Elder is the very essence of summer with its fragrant flowers and soot-dark fruits. It was said that an elder planted by your house would keep the devil away.

Mythology and symbolism

It was thought that if you burned elder wood you would see the Devil, but if you planted elder by your house it would keep the Devil away. It is also known as the ‘Judas tree’ as Judas Iscariot is said to have hanged himself from an elder tree.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has long been surrounded by folklore, healing traditions, and spiritual beliefs across Europe and parts of Asia. In old rural communities, people believed that planting an elder tree near the home protected the family from evil spirits, lightning, disease, and misfortune. A popular saying claimed that “an elder planted by your house would keep the devil away.” Because of this belief, the tree was often treated with great respect and was rarely cut down without permission rituals or prayers.

The elder tree produces clusters of fragrant white flowers and deep purple-black berries that have been valued in traditional herbal medicine for centuries. Elderberries are rich in antioxidants and are commonly used in syrups, teas, jams, and natural remedies, especially during cold and flu seasons. The flowers were also used to prepare soothing drinks and skin washes.
