Kiwi fruit tree Kashmir

Kiwi or Chinese gooseberry (Actinidia deliciosa) is grown widely in New Zealand, Italy, USA, China, Japan, Australia, France,Pakistan,Iran, Kashmir, Chile and Spain.

kiwi garden Kashmir

Kiwi is mostly grown in the mid hills of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, J & K, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh,Karnataka,Uttarakhand  and Kerala.  Having been very newly introduced in the country estimates of area and production have not yet become available.

Probably because they aren't mostly grown locally in India. They have to be imported. Import means taxes, more transportation charge, and higher risk of damage. All this leads to higher prices.
Kiwi orchards Kashmir

Kiwi fruit plant varieties cultivated in India are AbbottAllisonBrunoHaywardMonty and Tomuri.

Kiwi vine starts bearing at the age of 4-5 years while the commercial production starts at the age of 7-8 years. The fruits mature earlier at lower altitude and later at high altitudes because of variation in temperature. Large sized berries are harvested first while smaller ones are allowed to increase in size. After harvesting, the fruits are rubbed with a coarse cloth to remove stiff hairs found on their surface. Hard fruits are transported to the market. Subsequently, they lose their firmness in two weeks and become edible. Kiwi plant

Since kiwi is a dioecious plant, it bears pistillate and staminate flowers separately. Commercially grown important pistillate and staminate cultivars are:

Abbott : This is an early flowering and early maturing cultivar. The oblong, medium sized, fruits are covered with dense hairs. They are very sweet in taste with lower ascorbic acid content and medium titratable acidity.

Allison : Fruits resemble those of Abbott, except that these are slightly broader in proportion to its length. The petals of its flowers are overlapping and crimped along with margins. It is an early ripening, heavy bearer and sweet in taste. Ascorbic acid and titratable acidity are on the lower side. This variety is most suited for Himachal Pradesh.

Bruno : This cultivar requires comparatively less chilling period. The fruits are tapering in shape towards the stem end. They are longest among all the cultivars. The fruits is dark brown having very dense, short and bristly hair, highest in ascorbic acid and titratable acidity. The bearing is very heavy.

Hayward : Most popular cultivar or the world, Hayward is comparatively shy bearer with a tendency of biennial bearing. The fruit is broad and flat, being much wider in relation to length. It is superior in flavour with high sugar and ascorbic acid content. It requires comparatively more chilling hours.

Monty : It is a late flowering cultivar but fruit maturity is not late. The fruits are oblong, resembling those of Abbot and Allison. Being a highly prolific bearer cultivar, sometimes it needs hand thinning for obtaining good sized fruits. The fruit is somewhat wider towards blossom end with higher acidity and medium sugar content.

Tomuri : It is a good pollenizer for Hayward and Monty, the late flowering kiwis. Flowers appear usually in groups of 5. Allison : It is also used for pollenizing different cultivars.

Black Walnut-juglans nigra cultivation in Kashmir

Bot. name: juglans nigra
Black walnut logs bring premium prices, and have since the 1700s, with single trees bringing up to $20,000 (INR 1393170.08). Bruce Thompson, author of “Black Walnut For Profit,” estimates a mature stand of black walnut trees can bring about $100,000 (INR 1435.57) per acre in timber value alone.
Black Walnut seeds Kashmir

Black walnut. Walnut trees, like chestnuts, produce a double income, as the nuts can be harvested as the trees are growing to harvestable size for timber. Growers often call black walnut a “legacy tree” because it takes about 30 years to reach it’s prime harvesting size of about 16 inches or so for a veneer log. Along the way, the walnut stand can be thinned to provide income, but the real payoff comes at harvest, as veneer logs bring between $4,000 (INR 278634.02) and $5,000 (INR 348292.52) each. An average stand of black walnut is 250 trees per acre, or $125,000 (INR 8707313.01) at harvest time, quite a legacy for the kids or grandkids!

Contour hedges
Before you plant medicinal plants, plant hedges along the contour lines to prevent soil erosion, fertilise the soil, and provide shade. The lines should be 2–4 metres apart on sloping ground and 5 metres apart on level ground. Useful species include…
·         lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), a medicinal plant
·         leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) a legume which improves soil fertility
·         Cassia spectabilis which grows readily from metre-long cuttings
·         pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan)
·         moringa (Moringa oleifera) which produces edible leaves and beans which are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals.
Every year at the start of the rainy season, trim the hedges back to a height of about one metre, and work the leaves into the soil.
Trees
Plant fruit trees round the edges or alongside the garden. Depending on the soil, climate and altitude, include mango, tamarind, orange, papaya, guava and avocado trees. All these fruits are rich in vitamins A and C.
Plant neem trees if the climate allows. They have many medicinal, insecticidal and other properties. They grow well, even in dry climates.
Planting methods
If possible, make two gardens – a demonstration garden and a production garden. For the production garden, it is useful to establish a nursery to propagate seeds and small cuttings. It is better to sow in alternate lines or to mix up the various medicinal plants, as they would grow in the wild. In this way the plants provide shade for each other, and it is possible to reap a harvest in the dry season as well.
Learn from experience whether the plants grow best in full sun or in the shade, and whether they need a lot of water or a little. Observe carefully where they seem to flourish in the wild.
Demonstration garden
Set aside a small area as a demonstration garden which you can use for teaching purposes with medical staff, traditional healers, school children and teachers. Plant examples of each plant known to be used in traditional medicine. Place this garden near the road – for example near the entrance to a clinic or hospital – so everyone who passes can see it.
Label your plants
In the demonstration garden, give each plant a label, on which you write both the local name, the scientific name and its uses. Old iron sheets and plastic buckets can be cut up to make useful permanent labels. Write with a permanent marker. The scientific name is important, as visitors from another country – or maybe even from the next village – may call plants by quite different local names.

Sage for grey hair

Salvia officinalis-Sage is one of the oldest medicinal plants being used since ancient Egypt. By then it was used to stop bleeding wounds and for disinfection, also having curative properties in gastric diseases.
An old proverb says “who has sage in the garden does not need a doctor”, and reality perfectly reflects this sayings. In the garden it chase away insects that attack carrots, cabbage, strawberries, tomatoes and marjoram.
Dried sage leaves placed in the closet banish insects from the house. Sage essential oil is used in cosmetics, and the leaves are used successfully both in phytotherapy and gastronomy.
Sage can do wonders for the beauty chapter, especially for our hair. For example, in order to maintain the natural color and shine of your hair, after washing it with regular shampoo, do the final rinse with this decoction prepared as follows: put 3-4 tablespoons of crushed soaked sage in half a liter of water, let it sit for 8-10 hours then filter the liquid.
The resulting preparation is put aside and the plant left after filtration is boiled in half liter of water for five minutes, then leave to cool and filtered. Finally mix the two extracts, yielding approximately one liter of preparation that is used internally (1-2 cups per day) or externally as compresses and baths.
For black hair, a decoction prepared in the same way is recommended, but in a mixture of equal parts of black tea and sage. Sage is also good for gray hair care because it strengthens and restores its color.
Also, your teeth will become whiter and brighter if you rub them with sage leaves. Rinsing your mouth with tea sage will ensure an efficient cleaning of the oral cavity and, in addition, a fresh breath. (https://www.organicwave365.com)

Ginkgo biloba tree for future

The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centrewas established under the  Fruit & Medicinal plants Development Project during the year 2020-2011.  The infrastructure, existing as on date, was created over a period of 5-10 years.  The Ginkgo plantation was started during the year 2001-2004.  The main thrust of the programme was to develop Ginkgo plantation of  improved cultivars.

Cultivars/Varieties
'Autumn Gold' (perhaps Autumn Gold™) - This male (non-fruiting) selection is common in the trade and notable for its symmetrical crown that is broad and rounded. The mature size is 50' tall with a 30' spread and fall color is an excellent deep yellow.
'Jade Butterfly' - An unusual dwarf, slow-growing form, this plant has bright green leaves and a mature height that is less than half that of standard forms. It's an introduction out of New Zealand that is gaining popularity.
'Magyar' - An introduction that is gaining momentum in the trade, this plant is a non-fruiting male with upright, ascending branching to 60' tall and half as wide. It is well-suited to urban planting as a street tree.
'Pendula' (also listed as f. pendula) - Plants listed under this name are quite variable, with few expressing a strong weeping habit. Most bear branches that are horizontal or droop slightly
'PNI 2720' (Princeton Sentry®) - A very popular non-fruiting male form, this form assumes an upright habit that tapers to the point. It reaches 60' tall, but only 25' wide.
'Saratoga' - Commonly offered, this plant has a strong central leader and an upright, narrow habit (40' tall and 30' tall).
'Variegata' - Many different clones are offered under this name, but most feature leaves that are irregularly streaked with yellow.
